Arginase activity in the fat body homogenate of the insect was apparently higher than that of the whole insect body homogenate after the larva stops eating. The Km value for arginine, optimum pH and temperature in the arginase preparations isolated from the fat body of insect were not significantly different for 4- and 6-day-old larvae. The haemolymph obtained from 6-day-old larvae after eating stopped had an inhibitory effect on the arginase activity but no significant effect on the ornithine aminotransferase and pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase activities. The arginase inhibitor in the haemolymph was located in the fraction of Rf=0.93, as determined by the disc electrophoresis on a polyacrylamide gel. This fraction containing the arginase inhibitor occurred in the haemolymph of 5-day-old larvae and was continuously present in the larval haemolymph thereafter except for one day before emergence. Cosequently, it appears that the fraction (Rf=0.93) in the haemolymph has an important regulatory role on arginase catabolism after the larva stops eating.
