A new subsurface drainage method is, first of all, proposed. This method is to practise to drain the soil water by using porous pipe which is buried in the soil and given negative pressure. When the soil water is transmitted stronger negative pressure through the porous pipe than that of itself, the water starts flowing toward the pipe based on the pressure gradient. To drain the soil water forcibly is the principle of the new drainage method, negative pressure drainage. In order to prove the principle of the new method and com firm the effect of it, fundamental experiments were carried out using ceramic pipe. And then, some kinds of porous materials were collected and tested on physical properties for practicable drain pipe. The following were made clear. (1) The physical properties of ceramics are adequate for drain pipe material, but seem to be inferior in practical use. Thus, it is necessary to utilize other materials, especially synthetic fiber. (2) Part of the soil water is drained by the porous pipe given the negative pressure after the traditional tile drain has removed the gravitational water. (3) It seems to be possible to utilize the new drainage method in the farm, though several unsolved problems still remain.
