Loss and Gain on Glycyrrhizin Content of Glycyrrhiza (Glycyrrhizae Radix) by Gamma-Ray Irradiation

Effects of γ-ray irradiation on fine powder, coarse powder of glycyrrhiza and glycyrrhizic acid monoammonium salt n-hydrate as the standard reagent have been studied in the dose range from 10kGy to 270kGy. The relations between residual ratio and dose can be expressed by the formula previously reported. The G-value for glycyrrhizin has been calculated to be 5.1 for fine powder, and 9.3 for the standard reagent. By using the data on the radiation sensitivity of micro-organisms adhering to glycyrrhiza, it has been found that 7.5 and 2.7kGy are necessary for bacteria and fungi, respectively, to obtain the sterilization of the levels prescribed in a USP Forum. Thus it is considered that the dose of 10kGy is sufficient for the decontamination of most commercial Glycyrrhiza specimens. The loss of glycyrrhizin at 10kGy has been smaller than 1%, being within the deviation of the measurements. After the irradiation of 10 to 30kGy, on the other hand, the yields of glycyrrhizin from the raw materials of Afghanistan and Russian growth have increased by a factor of 1.4 compared with those of non-irradiated control.
