Sensitivity of the moss sporelings (Bryum pseudo-triquetrum) to u.v. was examined using spores gathered in 1965, 1966 and 1967, and the results are summarized as follows: 1) When spores were steeped in media, their sensitivities to u.v. concomitantly increased, then was intensified gradually with time but not so much. This might depend partly on the rise in opacity of cell wall and cytoplasm and partly on the change of the physiological state of nucleus by water absorption. 2) Three types of dose-response curves for germination were obtained, characterized by bending concave downwards (Type a), by nearly straight line (Type b), and by bending convex downwards (Type c). The year 1966 was predominated by the Type b and c, 1965 by the Type a and 1967 by the Type c. These were presumably caused by the physiological vigor of spores which were changeable each year. 3) Sensitivity of sporelings as expressed by subsequent growth of protonema, was much higher than that as expressed by the germination. 4) RD_<37> of this moss spore (the dose reducing germination into 37% of control) was 1.6-4.8×10^4 ergs/mm^2. These were 100 to 1000 times as high as those of bacteria and virus. 5) This moss spore responded to u.v. proportionally to the doses applied, tracing the multi-hit or multi-target type inactivation curve of 1.5 to 3.0 multiplicities. This, together with its unicellular form, suggested that the spore population within a sporogon was uniform in sensitivity and was available for the material to study the action of u.v. on more evolved plants.
