The ultrastructure of the parenchymal liver cell of the guppy was studied with the electron microscope. Special attention was paid to the micromorphology and function of the Golgi apparatus. Golgi complexes composed of a pile of double membranes are situated near the nucleus and in the zone of cytoplasm bordering the bile canalicule. Electron dense bodies are found within the Golgi cisternae or in the vicinity of the complex, being enclosed by a single limiting membrane. They are considered to represent granules at some stages in the production of bile. Hence, the Golgi apparatus is thought to play a role in the process of bile secretion.
