The present study was purported to extend the storage period of the chestnut through the inhibition of rooting and sprouting by the gamma radiation. The materials were stored in the moist sawdust. I. "Imakita" chestnuts (Castanea crenata) were irradiated at the doses of 3000, 7000, and 12000r on November 5, 1 month after the harvest. (1) When they were stored at 20℃ after the irradiation, 71% of materials in the control lot elongated the roots untill January 14, and the rooted materials in the 7000r lot were 36%. (2) When they were stored at room temperature, there were a few rooted materials in the middle of January in every lot. From January 16, they were removed into 20℃. Then the fruits commenced rooting immediately, the rooting percentage of control materials reached to 37% within 10 days after the removal, while the materials of 3000r lot showed the similar tendency as the control, 30% of 7000r lot rooted but their roots did not elongate as those of the control, and only 6% had very short roots in the 12000r lot. II. Castanea mollissima chestnuts which had been stored at low temperature were taken out on May 14, and irradiated on the following day at the relatively high doses of 10000, 15000, and 20000r, then stored at room temperature. (1) The root inhibiting effect of irradiation was not so striking as it was expected. The root elongation, however, were remarkably suppressed and the sprouts did not appear on the treated materials. (2) The concentration of ascorbic acid was slightly decreased by the irradiation. (3) Carbon dioxide evolution and sugar content were not affected by any dose of irradiation used in this study.
