1. The plants used in the studies were one-year old Crimson Glory and Red Pinocchio grafted on Rosa multiflora and the seedlings of Rosa multiflora. 2. Three separate trials were carried, one with roses planted on May 5, another with roses planted on November 25 and the other with roses planted on February 14. 3. All of them were planted in root boxes for the purpose of tracing the root elongation. 4. The root growth began early in March several days earlier than top growth. 5. Larger quantity of new roots was formed on fall-planted roses than was formed in the roses planted on February 14 by March 21. 6. In the spring-planted roses, the cycle of root extention have the tendency to alternate with that of shoot extention. 7. The cylic growth of roses in hot seasons was not so related with the fluctuation of temperatures, while that in winter months the rises and downs of root growth was correlated with temperatures and the roots formed in mild days ceased growth in the dates at freezing temperatures.
