The main feature of farming in Japan is cultivation of rice plants in paddy fields. The Japan islands have comparatively high degree of moisture and temperature because they are situated on a part of East Asia Monsoon zone and are caught in the rainy season by heavy rainfall for about thirty days from the middle of June to the middle of July. Japanese farmers and agricultural engineers, however, have been endeavouring to make reservoirs for irrigation water from rivers which empty themselves into the Sea of Japan or the Pacific Ocean, and wells for water-supply to farm-lands in order to secure irrigation water. And also the Japanese Government has been investing much money in land-improvement of our country. Most of paddy fields in Japan have developed on the alluvial and diluvial formations which had been formed by weathering soil and sand transported and accumulated from the mountainranges constituting the bones of our country, so that they are rather short of irrigation-water because of the large seepage from paddy fields developing on these diluvial and alluvial zone. There were some tests performed as primitive stopping processes against large seepage, as Kyakudo (Clay-dressing) or Tokojime (Rolling and tamping after removing aside top soil), but these methods have been neglected by the farmers because of its overlabor and expense. Some foundamental experiments in our laboratory and field-observations in the Lysimeter of growing rice plants were carried out during the last two years by the authors for the purpose of controlling seepage water from leaky paddy fields and controlling water leakage through earth-dams with Bentonite's properties like swelling, ion-substitution and thixotropy. These studies seem to be very important for saving and for making the best use of water for irrigation. And the purpose of these studies have been the following; (1) General consideration of seepage control by the use of bentonite. (2) Relations between a given method and the leaky paddy fields. (3) Calculation of available minimum amount of supplied bentonite. (4) Estimation of saving of supply-water for irrigation. (5) The influence of Bentonite on the yield of rice crop. (6) The keeping ability of manure outflow.
