1. Winter-flowering sweet peas and tulips were observed to determine the response of their growth habit and flower production to soil reaction. 2. Sweet peas and tulips grew best and produced the larger number of flowers of good quality at pH 6.7-7.0, and in the soils of excessive acidity or in the high lime soils they became dwarfed or die. 3. Sweet peas developed symptoms of phosphorous deficiency at pH 7.9 or at the plots lower than pH 5.0. Tulips grown at pH 6.8 were first to bloom, and that is profitable to the forcing. 4. The use of a pretty deal of hydrated lime on the cultivation of sweet peas and tulips is required if the soils tend to become acid.
