The 1st East Asia Summit (EAS) was held in Kuala Lumpur on December 14, 2005. After the Asian Economic Crisis, a number of East Asian wide cooperative frameworks including ASEAN Plus Three were explored, although ASEAN was the only regional cooperation in East Asia in the past. The 1st EAS was based on an extension of those cooperative frameworks. EAS will play a significant role in the development of East Asian regional cooperation and the formation of a future East Asian community. This paper examined the achievements and prospects of the 1st EAS in December of 2005. This theme was also examined from the perspective of intra-ASEAN Economic Cooperation. (JEL F02, F14, F15)
