Sydney Ahlstrom observes that there are "diverse denominational forces" within the "mainstream" as well as "varying responses of groups outside" to the Anglo-Saxon Protestant establishment in American religious history. Ahlstrom's attention to diversity in American religious tradition is especially true when we look at the history of religion in colonial America. Although Puritan experiments both in Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay dominate the historical discourses of the period, Catholics in New Spain and in New France preceded the Puritan migration by more than one hundred years. The Middle Colonies housed such diverse Protestant groups as Dutch Reformed, Presbyterians, and Lutherans from continental Europe enabling them to establish their religious diasporas. Even in rather homogeneous Puritan colonies, Quakers and Baptists as well as other radical dissenters constantly challenged the Puritan attempts to put the "New England Way" into practice. Focusing upon the diversity of colonial religion, this article also deals with the major factors for consensus-building among the various religious and ethnic groups at the time of the American Revolution.
