"Kanzeonbosatsu 32 Oshinzu" (観世音菩薩32応身図)of Chion-in (知恩院)is one of the Korean Buddhist masterpieces which were broughtto Japan atthe time of the invasion attempted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉). The painting which visualizes the contents of "Kanzeonbosatu Fumonbon" (観世音菩薩普門品), was commissioned in 1550 by Queen Inseon (仁聖王后)to work the memorial service for her deceased husband King Injong (仁宗). "Kanzeonbosatsu Fumonbon" explains 32 metamorphoses which Kanzeonbosatsu performs to relieve us in this mundane world. But it seems thatthe meaning of this picture is not innocent, because the historical situation surrounding it is veryviolent and cruel. The death of Injong in the year 1545 brought forth the "Night of the Long Knives" named Eulsa Sahwa (乙巳士禍), and subsequently many Confucians and bureaucrats were massacred or exiled from Seoul. Moreover, there was a persistent suspiction that Injong himself had been poisoned. In this article I try to reconstructthe hidden meaning of the picture considering the historical background of Chosun (朝鮮)Dynasty.
