The pottery vessels collected by Dr. A. Matsumura in his 1919 excavation were confined to those of the Early period of the prehistoric shell-midden culture in the Ryukyus. However, our last visit to the site in I960 added four new sherds (Fig.1) that were not obtained by Dr. Matsumura. These are the only ones at present which possibly show the upper limit of the site. These sherds are, however, all surface collections. Hence, three speculations may be made on their presence in the site, since excavation of the sites designated as "Bureid Cultural Assets" is prohibited except by the Culture Assets Committee itself. Of the three, the most probable is that there may be a portion in the Ogido site itself which yields the abdve vessels, rather than that these were brought in from another site. The occurrence of these vessels in such middens as Sunabe, Kusato-baru, Oyama, or in some other middens of the same age also appears to support the above view. If so, the Ogido midden too might have lasted until the early Middle period.
