Numerical investigation of indoor MIMO channel capacity

The channel capacities of the indoor multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system are investigated with consideration of the wall effects by using the hybrid techniques of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and the method of moment (MoM). Firstly, the MIMO channel capacities are calculated according to the physical parameters of the walls, i.e. relative permittivity, conductivity and thickness. Secondly, the MIMO channel capacities, the eigenvalues of channel transfer matrix, the averaged received power on each receiving branch, and the effective degrees of freedom (EDOF) of multiple paths are calculated and statistically analyzed with the wall reflectivity. It is found that the MIMO channel capacity can be improved with increasing the wall reflectivity when the transmitted power is fixed. However, the wall reflectivity has little effect on the indoor MIMO channel capacity when the channel normalization is adopted.
