An algorithm to estimate the biomass of coniferous forests by high-resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar is presented. The method is based on the empirical relation between the forests in Tomakomai, Hokkaido Japan and the order parameter of K-distribution of cross-polarization SAR data. Comparison is made between the biomass collected in 2005 and the biomass estimated by the empirical regression curve derived from the ground-truth data collected in 2002 and 2003. The result shows the measurement accuracy of 85%. It can be concluded that, at least for the Hokkaido forests, this algorithm is a good means of estimating the forest biomass.
