The Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) which is one of three sensors with Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) was launched by H-IIA launch vehicle on January 24, 2006 from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Tanegashima Space Center. At present, the initial checkout is being examined. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is very useful sensor for monitoring environment and natural resources. Especially, its observation capability at all weather, and day and night is expected to contribute an emergency monitoring of disasters such as earthquake, flood, landslide and so on. In addition, we tend that PALSAR data is utilized to promote scientific and application researches. In order to distribute the PALSAR products to the users, we need to conduct the image quality assessment, radiometric and polarimetric calibrations. Therefore, the calibration and validation account for nearly all of the term before data release. This paper describes the current status of ALOS/PSALSAR and its CAL/VAL. Moreover, in initial checkout phase, we could carry out an observation of Mt. Fuji in Japan and Leyte Island in the Philippines and, in the latter case, detect the area affected by mudslide as compared with the data acquired by Japan Earth Resources Satellite-1 (JERS-1) SAR. We show these preliminary results.
