As a consequence of the university reform in 1993, with the new academic year, opening in April 1995, there will start for the first time at Niigata University a so called 'intensive course' in German, French, Russian and Chinese, in which students from all faculties can take part. The course will be practised in small classes and with 4 lessons per week, double the time of which was taught up to now. The aim of the new course is based on the simple conviction that qualitative improvement in language teaching within General Education can only be achieved by intensifying and varying the learning process. This language course is the focus of the language teaching reform and will be extended in the coming years to enable students as many as possible to get a more efficient training in foreign languages. The 'intensive course' in German, French, Russian and Chinese is not completely new but was carried out already successfully at the Faculty of Humanities for the last two years. In this paper it will be exemplified, how the course can change language teaching, especially how it heightens achievement in language competence of the students and how this again spurs their motivation. It also will be pointed out that language teaching at the stage of General Education has to be different from that in highschools, so as to change the students attitude from a passive and receptive one to a more positive and constructive one.
