Although Japan and Korea are located very near one another in the western part of the North Pacific, their fish faunas have not yet been studied comparatively. Recent developments in ichthyology in the two countries have made it possible to analyze and compare their fish faunas. Compilations of data from recent publications and databases revealed that the Japanese fish fauna comprises about 3,800 valid species and that of Korea 1,100 valid species. Comparisons offish faunas of the two countries indicated that coral reef fishes and deep-water fishes are much more abundant in Japan than Korea.
