Two Indo-west Pacific puffers, Chelonodon laticeps and C. patoca, are so similar to each other that they have been confused by previous authors. The present paper compares specimens of the two species collected from various regions in the Indo-west Pacific. The detailed comparisons show that the two species are clearly separated by spinule distribution on the dorsum : in C. laticeps spinules are confined to the region between the posterior interorbital to just dorsal to the pectoral-fin base, and in C. patoca spinules extend posteriorly to the region just anterior to the dorsal fin. Chelonodon laticeps occurs only in the western Indian Ocean whereas C. patoca is widely distributed from India eastward through Indonesia to French Polynesia, northward to the Ryukyus and southward to Queensland in Australia.
