It has been acknowledged that teaching practice (practicum) plays a crucial role in preservice teacher education since it bridges the gap between theory and practice. The purpose of the present study is to examine how well student teachers from 1967 through 2000 performed in practicum and to re-consider the rating criteria for student teacher evaluations. The evaluation has eight rating criteria, which are categorized into three components in terms of the ability or attitude demonstrated: content-area teaching, student guidance and overall quality of teaching. The results show that the student teachers performed best in "overall quality of teaching" and performed better in "student guidance" than in "content-area teaching." The internal correlation method and factor analysis were used to validate the rating criteria. The results indicate that the eight items do not always correlate with the three prescribed components, implying that the rating criteria should be re-examined.
