First this paper provides a stream of studies of the family and community in Ireland. A pioneer work of the community study in Ireland was "Family and Community in Ireland" by Arensberg and Kimball in 1940 who described the social life of small scale family in Co. Clare. There is little doubt that we have accepted its study as the prerequiste of the following community studies. The Irish community studies have flourished in the 1970s and Gibbon's criticism to Arensberg and Kimball in 1973 has had a great impact on the Irish community studies after that, but it is true that community studies are limited in the coastal area of the West of Ireland. Secondly I approach the stem family in Ireland in comparison with the Japanese stem family. I grasp that the stem family is formed from two constituent elements, namely the norms of family and the situations of family, which have the relations of interdependence, and that norms of the stem family have three elements: allocation of familial members, inheritance of possession and familial role allocation. I analyse the stem family in Ireland from the above theoretical frame of reference on some Irish monograpies and I can understand the following facts. Consequently I can find that the distribution of the form of the stem family is limited in the coastline of the West of Ireland, particularly Co. Galway, Co. Clare, Co. Mayo and Co. Kerry and that in the early 20th century the stem family has existed in its areas, but it has experienced the decline untill the 1950s and therefore the nuclear family holds the dominant type in Ireland at present. Lastly we need to analyse the stem family from other elements of familial norm and the situational elements of the stem family in the next paper.
