Firstly, this paper provides a recent situation of the family in the United Kingdom in terms of the studying theme of "The family" being undertaken by the Economic and Social Research Council. Although the orthodox family studies has actively been studied in the family history, we can point out that the gender studies and the problems relating the unemployment to the family which has been influenced by the economic and social changes in United Kingdom are becoming a main stream of the family studies. Secondly, in the community studies, we can understand that the traditional community studies as the study of Gosforth by Professor W. M., Williams, which was the golden age from 1950s to 1960s, disappeared in 1970s and that a new stream of the community studies has appeared in the early 1980s from the perspective of social anthropology. Professor A. P., Cohen of University of Edinburgh is the new leader of the community studies. We grasp his new approach of the community study from "Belonging" and "Symbolising boundaries" which he has already published.
