The analysis of the development of market-oriented agriculture in prewar Japan has long been neglected only because of shortcomings of its framework. But it is indispensable to the complete understandings of both agrarian problems and agricultural policy. This paper seeks to examine the developing process of market-oriented production of vegetables in prewar Showa as concretely as possible. This study is also expected to be a first step which will clarify the structral characteristics of agrarian problems as well as agricultural policy during this period. Pricipal and provisonal findings are as follows: (1). As a relation to the process of agricultural production: 1, The market-oriented production of vegetables remarkably expanded especially in prewar Showa. 2, This process was promoted by the relative superiority of vegetables to rice in mid 20s and to cocoon in 30s in the phase of price fluctuation. 3, It was the same period when producing centres were formed, the process of which of course was the complex one accompanied with regional diversifications. Such a process presented extensive expansion (peripheralisation) of what is called Suburb type, with complementing of marginal demand for vegetables by Truck Farming that developed in Rural industry type and Pure rural type. These three regions are typfied by the type of labour market (see Table 2). 4, The process was developed by avoiding (or by way of roundabout) the pressure of landownership of landlordism either directly or indirectly. (2). As for the process of product-distribution corresponding to the production characterized above: 1, Shipments of vegetables were concentrated to six big cities which were located in Suburb type area. On the other hand, however, local distribution remained firmly in the other parts of Japan.
