The number of cases of "poor eyesight" among children has been increasing. To investigate the basic causes of "poor eyesight", we examined the results of eyesight tests performed on schoolchildren in Elementary School A (located in City B) since fiscal 1995. School A was chosen because there were large numbers of children classified as having "poor eyesight" among those graduating in March, 2000. As a result of our examination, we found that the number of cases of "poor eyesight" among children at School A had been increasing since fiscal 1997. Based on these results, we concluded that there is a need to investigate changes in the life environment of schoolchildren in School A and in City B. Through a comparison of the pre-and post-1997 environments, the reasons for the test results may be analyzed more effectively.
