Now-a-days sensor networking catches the interest of the network research community. These low power, tiny devices can be implemented in a variety of applications including simple environmental data collection to sophisticated military application. Though the scopes for sensor network are very promising they are limited by the battery life of the nodes. In order to design a longer lived sensor network several issues should be taken care of such as routing, data fusion etc. In this paper we discuss these issues in the light of LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) protocol. Our main target is to lengthen the network lifetime for particular application where it is required that the network will exist at least for a year. Here we propose heterogeneous network in order to make the lifetime of the network longer. Another approach is to use data fusion at the node level as well as in the cluster head level. So that nodes will transmit only for a short duration of time and turn their radio off as much as possible.
