A study was conducted at the Kitasato University Hospital Nursery among 236 healthy full term newborn infants to compare the effect of oral and intramuscular Vitamin K of the coagulation status of these infants with the use of the hepaplastintest. A comparison was also made on the effect of human milk and artificial milk on the hepaplastintest values. Repeat hepaplastintest determinations were done on 122 of these babies at the age of one month. Data were analyzed for statistical significance using the t-test. There is a significant difference in coagulation activity between the Control group and the Vitamin K group. But in general, these is no significant difference between the oral Vitamin K group and the intramuscular Vitamin K group. Furthermore, there is no significant difference in coagulation activity between babies on human milk and babies on artificial milk. At the age of one month, there is no significant difference in coagulation activity between the Control group and the Vitamin K group, whether on human milk or on artificial milk. It may be sufficient to administer Vitamin K orally to neonates during the first day of life as a prophylaxis for Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn, but is not sufficient to prevent idiopathic Vitamin K deficiency in young infants.
