The use of the GMA-Quetol 523 mixture as an embedding medium makes it possible to cut 1 to 2 micron sections from polymerized blocks. This offers great advantages for enzyme histochemistry. Enzyme activity (alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and non-specific esterase) can be localized far more precisely than in paraffin or frozen sections without loss of staining specificity. The results are excellent structural preservation with little distortion and shrinkage.
