The mean birth weight in 24 countries of the world is analyzed in terms of the following three environmental factors: per capita gross national product, stature of adult female and infant mortality rate. Regression analysis shows that only per capita gross national product has an effect on the variability in the mean birth weight. Observed mean birth weights are compared with the normative data (estimated mean birth weight) obtained from the simple regression equation on per capita gross national product in the form of the relative birth weight, or in the form of the graphical assessment, or both. The mean birth weights in India, Ceylon, Japan and U.S.A. are lower, though those in Thailand, Poland and Chile are higher in comparison with their economic status. From statistical and human ecological points of view, these racial of ethnic differences in the normalized mean birth weight are discussed.
