Changes in somatic proportion with fetal growth were analyzed by multivariate allometry. Eight external dimensions (trunk length, upper limb length, lower limb length, total head height, chest girth, upper arm girth, calf girth and head girth) were measured for 50 Japanese fetuses ranging from 137mm to 502mm in crown-heel length. Multivariate allometric analysis was carried out by a principal component analysis of the covariance matrix of natural logarithms. The first principal component regarded as growth vector accounted for 97.1% of total variance. Differential growth pattern was shown in the external form of the fetuses by the result of isometry test. High coefficients were found in the calf girth and the lower limb length, and low coefficients were found in the total head height and the head girth. Coefficients for upper limb and trunk dimensions were moderate. The result suggested the lower limb-trunk-head growth gradient tended toward longer and thicker lower limb, and lower and thinner head as seen in adults.
