During the prosperous Victorian age, when Thomas Hardy was active writing novels and poems, most British people were suffering from poverty and stifling social control. Most women in his novels are intertwined with marriage as a sacred promise before God and doomed to tragic life in the end. A large body of research and studies has been done on his novels about his view of morality; his view of life and society. This paper is focused on his view of women as the weaker vessel in the novel Jude the Obscure and his short story To Please His Wife. The paper mainly discusses motherhood of Sue, the heroine, in Jude the Obscure. Firstly, the background of this novel is shown and secondly, Hardy's relationship with women is described. Finally the analysis of the two works leads to a conclusion that women in his novels are obsessed with maternal instinct that often causes them to have tragic endings.
