The conservation of Hanoi 36 Streets has been an important town planning issue for the last 10 years. The history of this area began when the capital was relocated to Hanoi in 1010. The town was formed bringing various kinds of craftsmen together from the surrounding villages. Since then the streets have flourished as downtown Hanoi. The character is unique and attractive. Historic urban structures and historic houses remain. In June 1999 the people's Committee of Hanoi instigated regulations for preserving the historic houses and established an on-site preservation office in the quarter. In 2004 the area will be designated as a national conservation area. However it is very difficult to conserve the historic houses due to their close proximity to each other, the complicated ownership system and the high economic value. This is only an introductory study for the historic conservation of this area. We made two inspections of the outward appearance of the buildings, in March and September of 2003. The records show that many buildings, including valuable buildings, have been changed. In future research works it will be necessary 1) to record the changes more concretely and in detail, 2) to clarify the causes of these changes and 3) to propose countermeasures to protect against further changes.
