This paper is an analysis of the spoken language of Japanese children described in the Edo period realistic popular novel Ukiyoburo by Shikitei Sanba (1776-1822). The author separated the speeches into boys' and girls', and examined their characteristics. In the consecutive latter half of the research, the representative Meiji period novel Takekurabe by Higuchi Ichiyo (1872-96) will be examined. The research will probe into the literature written in the two periods; the Edo period in which people rigidly succeeded the manner of speaking of their own strata and the Meiji period where after synthesis people were allowed to rise in the society. The final purposes of the study are to find out the changes in our spoken language through the two periods, and to learn how potent the school education was in forming children's speech after the restoration.
