Sodium lignosulfonate (LS)-based polyurethane (PU) hydrogels were prepared from LS and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) derivatives. Water content (W_c) of the obtained PU hydrogels was less than 3.0 g g^<-1> and NCO/OH ratio was varied from 0.2 to 0.6 mol mol^<-1>. Phase transitions of LS and PU hydrogels were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From DSC curves, glass transition temperature (T_g), melting at low temperature (T_<ml>) and melting at high temperature (T_<mh>) were observed. It was also confirmed that there were three kinds of water, non-freezing water, freezing bound water and freezing water.
