Particles such as those in examples (1) to (5) add aspectual meanings to the verbs. Let us consider the following examples : (1) They chipped away at the power of the government. (2) If you like a good story, read on. (3) I don't mind you using the kitchen as long as you clear up afterwards. (4) Don't judge the man guilty without at least hearing his story out. (5) If her phone's engaged, keep on trying. In example (1), away adds the sense of "continuation" to the verb chip. In example (2), on adds the sense of "continuation" to the verb read. In example (3), up adds the sense of "completion" to the verb clear. In example (4), out adds the sense of "perfection" to the verb hear. In example (5), on reinforces the sense of "continuation" already expressed by the verb keep. In this way, the particles away, on, up and out add aspectual meanings to the verbs and form phrasal verbs or phrasal prepositional verbs. Our concern in this thesis will be with the particles away and on, which are construed with certain verbs to add the aspectual meaning of "continuation." Away has the central meaning of "movement from a starting point, "while on has the central meaning of "contact with a surface." By taking these central meanings into consideration, we can make it clear that away and on are different in meaning. Also it will be shown how greatly the particles away and on contribute to the formation of phrasal verbs and phrasal prepositional verbs.
