With the growing interest in 'foreign' Shakespeare in the last two decades, Japanese Shakespeare productions too have attracted worldwide attention. This paper focuses on the exported productions of Yukio Ninagawa, one of the most prestigious and prolific Japanese directors of Shakespeare. Since 1985, Ninagawa has successfully staged 11 productions in UK and US, including Ninagawa Macbeth (1985), King Lear (1999), Macbeth (2002) and Pericles (2003). By reviewing the reviews of these four productions in UK and US, this paper explores how they were actually received abroad, and, moreover, what has contributed to Ninagawa's success so far. This process involves re-assessing Japanese Shakespeare productions in generalwhether they have managed to challenge Anglo-centricity of Shakespeare productions.
