Othello has increasingly become the tragedy of our generation with topical issues such as race, gender, domestic violence, and colonialism. Particularly in UK, Othello productions have grown in number since the 1980s. This paper aims to examine how these productions represent the play's relevancy to here and now by relocating its setting. A comparison between British and Japanese productions of the past two decades has shown that the former has a distinct preference for modernization, while the latter tends to choose a romantic and exotic past for the play's setting. The paper discusses how each production's (re)location works as well as what has caused this overall difference of choice between the two countries.
