Eight fluorescent pteridine-like substances and a single non-fluorescent red ocherous pigment were isolated with two-dimentional paper chromatography from head tissues of the Japanese house fly, Musca vicina. Among two pigment substances existing in large amounts, yellow fluorescent pigment of spot No. 3 was identified as sepiapterin from the spectro-absorption curves and Rf values. Another red ocherous non-fluorescent pigment eluted from chromatogram No. 9 was concluded to be similar to the photolabile yellow pigment reported in 1959 by Bowness and Wolken, and to be entirely different from sepiapterin and iso-sepiapterin.
