The cooling effect of a lake on the surrounding air temperature was investigated in this paper. Air temperatures at six observation stations in the vicinity of Lake Toya, Hokkaido, were observed for about two weeks in spring, 1978. One of the stations was on the lake shore and the other five stations were located at about 450 m, 850 m, 1630 m, 2000 m and 2730 m from the lake shore, respectively. During the observation period, the lake water temperature was about 10-15℃ lower than the air temperature. The results obtained were summarized as follows. (1) The cooling effect of the lake was very strong when the wind was blowing from the lake in clear weather. On such days the air temperature difference between the lake shore and the interior, approximately 1600 m from the lake shore, was about 7℃. (2) The cooling effect of the lake was seen even on rainy days, although the effect was less pronounced. (3) The cooling effect of the lake disappeared when the wind was blowing from the interior to the lake. (4) On the lake shore, the change of the air temperature was very large when the wind was slightjand the weather^was'clear.
