The benthic marine algal flora on the Okhotsk coast between Soya Misaki and Masuura (Abashiri) in Hokkaido was investigated from 1978 to 1979 and compared with those of northern Japan Sea coast and eastern Pacific coast of Hokkaido. This coast is a mixed water region which is affected by Soya warm current in summer and by East Sakhalin cold current in winter. 114 species including 15 green algae, 42 brown algae and 57 red algae were collected from the Okhotsk coast (Table 2). The algal flora of the coast is characterized by the mixture of upper temperate and lower boreal species. Among the species, Bryopsis plumosa ; Laminaria chichorioides, Coccophora langsdorfii ; Gloiosiphonia capillaris, Grateloupia turuturu, Gymnogongrus flagelliformis, Champia parvula, Ceramium japonica, Dasya sessilis, Phycodrys radicosa, Chondria dasyphylla are warm current species distributed through Soya Strait from the Japan Sea coast. Dumontia simplex, Hyalosiphonia caespitosa and Delesseria serrulata are stopped at Soya Misaki. Spongomorpha duriuscula ; Sphacelaria plumigera, Saundersella simplex, Heterosaundersella hattoriana, Chordaria flagelliformis, Pelvetia wrightii, Fucus evanescens ; Farlowia irregularis, Hypophyllum middendorfii are lower boreal cold current species which are distributed on the eastern Pacific coast of Hokkaido. On the other hand, Analipus filiformis, Halopteris scoparia, Eudesme sp., Delamarea attenuata, Stschapovia flagellaris, Neodilsea crispata are found only on the Okhotsk coast and Nemuro Strait coast within Hokkaido.
