In this report, the historical process of environmental science in Japanis described with characteristics and aims outlined in the report of the Scien-tific Committee in our country being discussed first. The Graduate School of Environmental Science at Hokkaido University was created in 1977. The school is characterized by interdisciplinary studies. It is composed of four branches (Environmental structure, Social environment, Environmental preservation and Environmental planning) consisting of 17 departments. The graduate school of environmental science of Tsukuba University and Hokkaido University were compared from the viewpoint of these structures and aims. The most important role of environmental science is the solution of environmental problems. Environmental concepts and systems were explained with references to Claude Bernard, SCOPE, the USSR, Tatsumi, Purdom and from the author's viewpoint. The interrelationships between the environment and health were discussed from the viewpoints of health glades and of indicators for settlement of environmental criteria in the US National Academy of Science, in WHO and in our country. Finally, the theme and the studies of our Department of Environmental Medicine, Division of Social Environment were discribed. They are as follows : (1) Studies on the environmental conditions of human life in Hokkaido as a northern region. (2) A study on the distribution of essential and toxic metals in humans and the metabolism of related enzymes. (3) A study on the present levels of environmental contamination from heavy metals and blood levels in the residents of Hokkaido, etc..
