During the last few decades several workers have tried repeatedly to establish time-stratigraphic units recognizable throughout the Neogene strata developed within the Japanese Islands. We must point out, however, that none of these have been satisfactory either to fulfill the conditions given by the current codes of stratigraphic classification, or to carry out precise time-correlation. This is at least in part due to the misuse of paleontologic criteria caused by inadequate understanding. Under these circumstances, an attempt is made in the present paper to review and evaluate various biostratigraphic zonations previously proposed in the light of the "stratigraphic codes", and to clarify characters and geographic extents of the respective biostratigraphic zones. Taking Northeast Honshu Island as an example, various units are critically examined as to their character and their vertical and horizontal limits are diagrammatically plotted in terms of the Neogene stratigraphic division of the Akita area and Kitamura's (1959) orogenic stages (Fig. 2). The units examined are of planktonic foraminifers (Shinbo and Maiya, 1969), diatoms (Kanaya, 1959 ; Koizumi, 1968), turritellids (Kotaka, 1959), pectinids (Masuda, 1962), anadaras (Noda, 1966), and plants (Okutsu, 1955 ; Suzuki, 1959 ; Tanai, 1961 ; Murai, 1962-63). The result of the examination seems quite satisfactory to adjust the mutual relationship among these units, and to be useful to promote future works related with the time-stratigraphy of Japan.
