• It is difficult for foreign students learning Japanese as a second language to understand the meanings of the words of a hymn written in classical Japanese. Unlike native speakers of Japanese, it is easy for them to figure out the grammatical rules. Japanese language learners' understanding of classical Japanese in "The Lord's Prayer" was examined. Their understanding is not related to the length of their campus life nor their knowledge of the modern Japanese language. Grammatical rules are the key for them to understand words in a hymn.
