With the advent and rapidly growing popularity of the Internet bringing various corners of the globe together in one large community, comprehensible written communication of any kind is becoming critical to any modern person's array of social skills. English is recognized as one of the most widely-used languages in the world ; therefore, comprehensible written English is not only a critical business skill, but a generally useable social skill as well. University students are in a position to be on the cutting edge of acquiring these modern skills. But many Japanese students are rarely taught to write in a coherent or communicative manner in their native language, never mind in English. University entrance exams nominally reflect the standard of work required of students ; such exams have recently been testing for communicative writing skills in English, as well as in Japanese. This paper will present arguments for teaching communicative writing skills at the senior high and juku/yobikou levels of education.
