Since 1969, more than 20 wells have been drilled for prospection of ore deposits in the eastern foot-hill area of Mt. Iwate. The Neogene deposits concealed under the Quaternary volcanic products in this area based upon detailed examination of the cored rocks from 18 wells have been subdivided into four subsurface lithostratigraphic units. In this paper, the Neogene sequence in the surrounding area is reviewed briefly to interpret the paleogeography. Based on these informations, a possible interpretation of the lateral changes in lithofacies and stratigraphical relationship between the units are discussed. Bouguer anomalies suggest the existence of two structural patterns in the basement rocks, one of which coincides with the faults of N-S trend between No. 3 and S-51 Wells, and the other indicates the surface relief of NW-SE trend of the basement. The major structure of the Neogene deposits is thought to be much affected by the surface relief and the linear structural pattern developed in the basement.
