Increasing the seal strength of traps has been considered useful as a means of reducing seal loss which is caused by induced siphonage. A considerable amount of research has been conducted on the seal strength of traps with uniform diameters (i.e. P trap), but few studies have dealt with WCs because of their complex internal structure and greater variety. In this study we have selected six most commonly used types of WCs, and conducted discharge experiments to compare the seal strength in terms of pneumatic pressure in drain and seal loss level. The results showed that there was a stong correlation between pneumatic pressure and seal level, and the seal loss computed from the ratio of leg's cross sectional area corresponded with that obtained from experiments. Consequently relative performance of the six types of WCs in terms of seal strength was assessed with the residual seal depth taken into acount.
