Mechanisms of loss caused by leakage through the impeller tip clearance of a centrifugal compressor were surveyed employing the curved flow channels modeled after the flow channels of the impeller. The experiments were conducted by using five curved flow channels having the relative tip clearance of 0, 0.0125, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 respectively. Velocity distribution in the curved flow channels and pressure drop towards the downstream were measurved. The principal results obtained from the experiments were as follows. The leakage through tip clearance originated additional secondary flow in the main flow, and the larger the tip clearance was, the larger the additional secondary flow became. The pressure drop also became larger as the tip clearance became larger levels. As both the additional secondary flow and the pressure drop had the same tendency for the variation of the tip clearance, it could be deduced that the loss caused by the leakage was based on the secondary flow added newly through the leakage to the main flow.
