The Boundary layer thickness, velocity distribution within the boundary layer and pressure drops were examined by employing a flow channel in which two streams collided with at 20 degree angle each other. The flow channel was a test, equipment modeled after the diffuser inlet in a centrifugal compressor. The turbulence intencity as well as the flow velocity was measured through the experiment and a hot wire anemometer was employed for measurement of the former and a pitot tube for the latter. The flow velocities in the two flow path constructing a part of the flow channel were varied independently. The following conclusions were obtained from the results. The virtual kinematic viscosity ε varied as the flow moved towards the downstream when the ratio of flow velocity in the lower velocity side flow path to that in the higher one was smaller than unity, though the variation of ε towards the downstream did not appeared when the ratio of the flow velocities was unity. The pressure drop measured at any cross-section in the flow channel was larger than that obtained theoretically, and the discrepancy resulted from the additional turbulence caused by the collision.
