English relative clauses appear to rise a chain of soaring peaks of difficulty in the way of the Japanese students who are studying English at schools. This is chiefly due to the lack of their counterparts in the Japanese language. Though Japanese "contact clauses" are functionally similar to English relative clauses, yet the difference between the two in their meaning as well as in their morphology, syntax and distribution, are unsurmountably huge. The purpose of this paper is to see, after some observations of the basic similarities and differences between the two languages with particular reference to their relative clauses, what kind of conflicts are created by the native language in the study of English relatives by a Japanese student, and then to consider how we can make use of the knowledge thus acquired in the teaching of English at schools. The items to be considered will be as follows : -1. Condensing Process of Relativization 2. Restricted and Non-restricted Clauses 3. Constraints on Relativization 4. Correspondence between Thematization and Relativization 5. Problems in the Study of English Relatives 6. Verification
