The following is a report on the actual survey conducted in 1969 in Shomura, a fishing village in Katsumotoura, located on the tiny island of Iki, in the north-west Kyushu. At first this report, gives a brief reference to the culture and natural features of Katsumotoura and Iki-jima in order to explain the background of Shomura village which retains the old-time charm, still untainted by urbanization. Secondly, it presents the individuality of Shomura which is one of the effective groups' of Katsumotoura community as clearly seen in the main festival of Katsumotoura observed for the Shomo Shrine which is located on the northern outskirts of Shomura. After explaining the relationship between the community of Katsumotoura and Shomura, one of the effective groups' of Katsumotoura, the report brings out the architectural construction of Shomura based on the bird's-eye view drawing and the ground plans of the entire Shomura village as surveyed. Furthermore, it expounds the construction of architectural unit from the drawings of ground plans and sectional view of the typical house lay out with the road separating the sea-front houses and the other line of houses. Finally, this report analyzes the village construction of Shomura as was made clear by the design survey.
