The effect of external stress on the microstructure of martensite in polycrystalline TiNi compound was investigated using optical micro-scope and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The deformation relaxation mechanism of thermally formed martensite against the external stress was as follows. Initially the favourable twin grew at the expense of other twin within a same variant, subsequently one variant grew at the expense of other variant. The stress-induced martensite (SIM) took the band-shaped morphology and formed in the most favourable direction. The crystallography of SIM was as same as that of thermally formed martensite.
